Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island Complaint #12

My cat was brought in while i was on vacation with neurological symptoms. He was placed on an IV and anti seizure medicine and kept for 2 nights for about $1350.00- FINE. When I arrived from Europe 18 hours later they  recommended additional test- MRI, spinal tap etc to determine if it was a stroke, tumor or which kind of virus or bacteria would cause the blindness, balance issues and seizures in the 9 MONTH OLD KITTEN.  All for a small fee of $4000.00 additional plus the treatment they decide on.

When i asked how they would treat a stroke I was told they don’t.
When I asked about the tumor I was told it was highly unlikely that he had one based on his age and they likely would not perform surgery if he did.
When I asked how they would treat the other likely causes that they could identify ( which was like 1 of 3 – one of those being fatal) i was told they prescribe a steroid or antibiotic.

SO- I asked why they did not just start him on the antibiotic and steroid I was told that they thought I would like to run the tests when i returned and it would cloud the results. WHAT??

This was not communicated to my family that brought him in. I declined the tests and brought him to a reputable Vet that communicated that they level of testing they recommended was not only inappropriate and the results would not change the treatment, but WOULD LIKELY CREATE ADDITIONAL STRESS ON THE ANIMAL.

We treated him with the Antibiotics and Steroids, his sight returned within a week along with his balance, and he’s happy and normal.

Bottom line is they seem more interested in doing costly testing rather than helping.  Nice clean rooms but its part f the show. The only reason I have given the one star is because they did treat him for the seizures and dehydration.

(Many complaints on yelp were made due to lack of compassion, understaffed, exorbitant pricing,  price gauging. Also despite being an emergency facility 24/7 do not have emergency staff 24/7 and borderline negligent)
